A considerably ambitious project was officially inaugurated on Monday 23rd of September 2013, in Thessaloniki. At the inaugural meeting,  participated the partners' representatives from all around the Black Sea and the institutional representatives from  the organisations involved in the funding of the project. The “LIMEN” project is co-funded by the European Union, by the Black Sea Basin Joint Operational Programme “Black Sea 2007-2013” and by national resources and it is coordinated by the E.K.B.M.M. The project consitutes an applied contitnuation of the on going project “OLKAS: From the Aegean to the Black Sea. Medieval Ports in the Maririme Routes of the East”. The partners of the project are 7 organisations from 6 countries:the Istanbul University (Turkey), the Municipality of Kavala (Greece), the Museun for National History and Archaeology from Constanta (Romania), the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Odessa City Counsil (Ukraine), the “G. Chubinashvili”  National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation (Georgia)the Municipality of Varna (Bulgaria),  and the Koc University of Istanbul (Turkey). The project is supported by important international organisations: ·        the “Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and  “Business Council of the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation”, based in Turkey ·        the “Black and Azov Seas Ports Association” based in Ukraine ·        the “International Black Sea Club” based in Bulgaria The aim of the “LIMEN” project is to decisively contribute to addressing an important gap in the development of cultural tourism in the wider Black Sea area. Using the valuable experience from the institution of the European Capital of Culture, the special objective/aim  of the project is the establishment of a new institution, the “Black Sea Cultural Port”. The establishment of this new and promising Institution consitutes the main objective of the project and it is proposed as an inovative tool for the promotion of the cities-ports of the Black Sea and of their cultural treasures. Its pilot implementation will be launched in the city-port of Istanbul using the financial resources of the “LIMEN” project. Additionaly, the aim of the project is for the Institution of the “Black Sea Cultural Port” to be established in a way that will promote the institutional cooperation of the cities-ports on a permanent basis. Also, to develop a structured cultural-touristic-economic-social network, to improve the administrative capacity at local level and to create the conditions of promoting and supporting the SMEs involved in the fields of culture and tourism. By using the euporean experience from similar institutions and the existing networks in the area,  the project aims to: ·        become the “umbrella action” for all the cross-border and transnational development initiatives that concern the cities-ports in the Black Sea basin ·        create a development platform that, in economic and cultural terms, will ensure the equal and sustainable cooperation which will meet the contemporary needs ·        to promote the cultural value of these areas and to connect the past with the current economic scenery ·        to promote the tourism product by developing an insitutionalised model of  cooperation, characterised by parity between the participant city-ports ·        support the tourism and other enterprises in the promotion process of special tourism products of each area, especially those connected with the ports and the sea routes.
